Juneteenth

This year, like last, we are celebrating with the Juneteenth WOD developed by @iron.roots.athlete for their Walk With Us Series. The workout is:

6 Rounds:
19 Double Push-Up Burpees
18 Pull Ups
65 Alternating Jumping Lunges
400m Run

On June 19, 1865 the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued on January 1, 1863, was read to newly freed Black citizens in Texas. The Juneteenth holiday is about remembrance, and in that light we hope that it inspires us to look back at the history of our very own neighborhood. During our 10am Strength and Cardio class on June 19th we will be doing the above workout, but we also will be asking athletes to donate to the Weeksville Heritage Center.

Weeksville was one of the largest free Black communities in pre-Civil War America, and was founded by James Weeks in 1838 right here in Crown Heights.Weeksville's historical borders composed much of Eastern Crown Heights, and you can see some of the restored homes at the Heritage Center. The Center is a historic site and cultural center that uses education, arts and a social justice lens to preserve, document and inspire engagement with the history of Weeksville.

Athletes can donate to the Center, HERE. We are asking participants make a one time donation of $25 or more.
